Talking about Teething: Part II - Tips & Titbits

Our babies need our constant attention but teething is a time when we need to take it up a notch. In our previous blog you’ve seen what happens when during teething so now let’s go through some simple tips to soothe your little one when their teeth start sprouting. There are a couple of things you can do to ensure your baby is less fussy and more easy.

  • Teethers or teething rings are a great choice for your babies to chew on during their teething period. They have a tendency to gnaw on objects (also their parent’s fingers) when they’re teething. The light pressure of chewing relieves their sore gums.

  • Another option is to use silicone gum massagers and gently apply pressure on the tender gums to soothe your baby.

Pro tips while using teethers:

  1. Cool or chill the teething ring in the refrigerator before use, the cold further acts to numb out the soreness of the gums.

  2. Avoid freezing the teething rings as they might cause more harm than good to your baby’s delicate gum pads.

  3. Use optimally sized teething rings, small enough to be easily handled by your baby but not small enough to be swallowed or aspirated.

  4. Avoid using teethers with liquids or gels within them, you don’t want to risk the liquid leaking out while your little one chews away at it.

Using silicone gum massagers:

  1. They are also called finger tooth brushes.

  2. It has two surfaces, one bristled surface to brush teeth with, and the other is made up of small bumps that can be used to massage and apply light pressure to the gums.

At home teethers:

One simple DIY teether is to roll a piece of gauze or a soft cloth, dip it in cold water or iced water and then squeeze out the excess water. These cool gauze rolls can then be stored in a airtight container in your refrigerator and you can give them to your babies when they’re chewing away at things. The cool roll will definitely comfort their sore gums.

Pro tip: Do not freeze these rolls, cooling them is enough, we don’t want our babies frost bites from their teethers.

This is another simple remedy for babies who have started other meals apart from breast milk.

You can choose to give your baby yoghurt or fruit purees that are slightly cool. They are soft and easy to swallow but the lowered temperature of these food items aids to numb your baby’s gum pads while still ensuring they’re having a nourishing meal.

Now for toddlers who have a few teeth in their mouth you can also give them slices of apples, carrots or celery. These provide the chewy resistance babies are looking for and ease their tenderness through mild pressure application during eating.

Extra cuddles are the best! This is something that goes without saying. Your little bunny is in discomfort so adding in on some extra time with their mamas and dadas goes a long way. They feel more cozy and comfy in their parent’s arms and anyone would feel better with a few hugs don’t you think? You try it and see how they go from irritable and fussy to warm and fuzzy :)

An important thing to remember is that your baby has a tendency to put various objects in her mouth and this tendency increases during teething. So do not give them teethers or any other object or food items without supervision. Also bear in mind to not use any teething gel or medication without consulting your doctor first, not all over the counter medications are safe.

Now you can try any or all of these simple remedies to soothe your little one. We hope they make the teething process as effortless as possible for your cuddly bunnies and keep them happy and smiling always!
