TREATMENT WITH CLEAR ALIGNERS

If you are seeking an attractive smile without braces can choose treatment with clear aligners like Invisalign! This treatment modality is a braces free way of straightening teeth with customized, removable aligners.

It is not only a more comfortable way to straighten your teeth but is highly aesthetic as well. The aligners are nearly invisible, and you can get your teeth straightened without anyone knowing! Aligners being removable in nature also allow you to continue eating food of your liking without restrictions and also can be removed for a little while if you have any important social commitments.

TREATMENT WITH BRACES

Braces is a long established method of carrying out teeth straightening. Treatment with braces consists of placement of brackets on the teeth in a specific position which are then interconnected by a wire passing through them.

Different types like metal braces, ceramic tooth coloured braces and self-ligating braces are now available due to the need for a more aesthetic way to straighten your teeth and the technological advances in the field of orthodontics. Choose the type of braces you want and start your orthodontic journey!

TREATMENT WITH MYOFUNCTIONAL APPLIANCES

During growth, children may experience an inconsistency in the growth of either or both of the jaws. These inconsistencies may result in an aesthetic compromise as well as a faulty bite. Luckily these can be corrected when the child is growing by utilizing the inherent growth potential that children have. Treatment may be carried out with expanders, trainers, growth modification appliances or habit breakers that aid in correcting the position of jaws as well as teeth in a more favourable position.

ORTHO-SURGICAL TREATMENT (ORTHODONTICS WITH ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY)

Some malocclusions (problems in the position of teeth and the bite) cannot be corrected by orthodontic treatment alone. In adult patients, who have surpassed their growth years any correction of the position of jaws requires a surgical treatment if they are to be set right.

Movement of teeth is carried out with braces as always but in spite of correcting the position of teeth it may not be possible to achieve an aesthetic and functional balance due to an underlying disproportion of one or both the jaws. In such cases orthodontic treatment aided by orthognathic surgery is carried out so as to achieve optimal results.

TREATMENT FOR CLEFT LIP AND PALATE PATIENTS

Cleft lip and cleft palate is a developmental disorder that result when the lips and jaws fail to fuse completely when the baby is in the mother’s womb. Children born with cleft lip and/or palate need comprehensive care from the time of their birth, through their childhood and teenage years to their adulthood through various stages of growth.

These children may have altered jaw position as well as displacement of teeth from their natural positions due the presence of the cleft. An orthodontist is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team of doctors that work to provide holistic care for children and adults with clefts.

Some pointers about orthodontic treatment

Why do you need treatment with braces?

Treatment with braces helps to correctly align any existing irregularities of tooth position and/or jaw position.

The correct alignment of teeth brings them into a more stable position and optimizes their functional efficiency.

Well aligned teeth are also easy to clean and the process of maintaining good tooth and gum health is facilitated.

The improvement in the smile aesthetics is another advantage and this treatment may also contribute positively towards building self-esteem and confidence.

Why should you be treated by an Orthodontist?

Orthodontics is a specialized branch that requires a doctor to be further trained after completing their Bachelors in Dental Surgery. Tooth movement is a complex process that requires training in ‘Biomechanics’ which is the science of movement of teeth within the bone. Qualified Orthodontists with their sound scientific base are best equipped to carry out such treatment.

At Aesthetix Dental Clinic, Dr Janhavi Nene works as a full-time orthodontist. She has specialized in Orthodontics, completing her 5 years of Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) followed by 3 year Masters’ program (MDS) from KLE University. She has also undertaken further courses to incorporate the latest technological advances in her practice and is an Invisalign-certified practitioner.

What is the correct time to start treatment with braces?

The Indian Orthodontic Society recommends a screening for orthodontic treatment at the age of 7 years. Treatment may or may not be started at this age, but certain problems of the jaw are best treated at this age and hence a screening becomes necessary. Interception of certain habits like thumb sucking and mouth breathing can also be done early on that can prevent any serious problems from developing later. Treatment at this stage may range for a few months to a year and children might require another phase of the treatment when their permanent teeth erupt.

After this first screening, treatment can be started once the child has shed most of his/her milk teeth which usually happens by the age of 11 years.

Till what age can I start treatment with braces?

There is no specific age limit for treatment with braces. Braces can be used to align teeth in children and adults alike. The only requisite for treatment with braces is to have healthy teeth soundly supported by the jaw bones. Adults seeking treatment with braces have more aesthetic options like Invisalign and clear braces.

For how long do I need to wear braces?

The treatment duration depends on the severity of the case to begin with. On an average orthodontic treatment ranges from 18 to 24 months but some small corrections can be achieved in as less as 4-6 months. A phase of retention follows treatment completion and is essential to maintain the results achieved with orthodontic treatment.
