Some doubts answered about tooth coloured restorations

What is a tooth coloured filling?

A tooth coloured restoration (filling) is a composite resin that is used to repair a damaged tooth. These fillings blend with the natural color of the tooth. Multiple shades of composites are available to shade match your teeth precisely.

How long do tooth coloured fillings last?

Dental fillings last for many years so long as proper oral hygiene is maintained. Avoidance of chewing on any hard objects that are not food items is essential to avoid chipping or fracturing of the restorations. Tooth coloured fillings usually last for 5-7 years. Regular 6-monthly follow ups are advised to ensure long term maintenance of all restorations.

Are tooth coloured fillings safe?

Tooth coloured fillings are a safe treatment modality to restore tooth material lost to decay. They not only mimic the tooth colour but also have similar properties of wear resistance and translucency and prove to be a long lasting and reliable treatment option.

What precautions should be taken after undergoing a tooth filling?

Immediately after your tooth filling is completed, your mouth may be numb so be careful not to chew on your lips or tongue till the anaesthesia wears off. If your bite feels high after the the numbness is reduced, call us for an appointment where we can reshape the filling and normalize the way you bite.

Do tooth coloured fillings stain?

Tooth coloured fillings may stain over time due to the consumption of pigmented foods and beverages. However newly developed composite materials, such as those used at Aesthetix, have a high polishablitiy and reduced staining potential.

What is a temporary filling? How long is it meant to be in the mouth?

Temporary fillings are placed after removing all the decay from the affected tooth. This may be done if you are undergoing a root canal treatment where the same cavity needs to be accessed many times, or at times to ensure the tooth is no longer symptomatic before the final filling is done. It usually is placed until the period of the next dental appointment.
